POPE LEO XIV INAUGURATES SAGRADA FAMÍLIA’S FINAL TOWER ON GAUDÍ CENTENARY

World News Posted Saturday 13 June,2026

BARCELONA — One hundred years to the day after pioneering Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí was tragically struck and killed by a Barcelona tram, his magnum opus has finally claimed its crown.

On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV led a solemn and historic Mass inside the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, officially blessing the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ. The addition of the colossal, 55-foot white ceramic and glass cross atop the central spire officially seals the exterior silhouette of the cathedral, rendering it—at 172.5 meters (566 feet)—the tallest church building in the world and the tallest structure in Barcelona.

An estimated 120,000 faithful, locals, and tourists flooded the cordoned-off streets surrounding the Eixample district, watching a spectacular light show and firework display illuminate the basilica’s heavily detailed facades following the evening blessing.

“Much more than a monument, the Basilica of the Sagrada Família remains a work in progress today, reminding us that the Christian life is always a journey,” Pope Leo XIV announced during his homily, speaking in both Spanish and Catalan to a packed crowd that included Spanish King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

A Century and a Half in the Making

The milestone marks a monumental symbolic completion for a project that has baffled, frustrated, and inspired the architectural world for 144 years.

Construction originally began in 1882 under a different architect before a 31-year-old Gaudí took the reins in 1883, completely reimagining the church into a hyper-complex, nature-inspired fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. When Gaudí died in 1926, only a single tower was finished. For the last century, seven generations of chief architects have had to rely on fragmented models, memory, and advanced algorithmic engineering to bring Gaudí’s vision to life—especially after many of the original blueprints were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.

The newly inaugurated Christ tower is the crown jewel of an 18-spire layout, out-topping the surrounding spires dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists, and the 12 Apostles.

The Tallest Church in the World—But Not Quite Finished

While the completion of the central tower means the basilica has reached its definitive vertical peak, local organizers are quick to remind the public that the scaffolding won’t be coming down entirely just yet.

Total Height 172.5 meters (Surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster)
Current Annual Visitors Upward of 5 million people
Projected Final Completion Mid-2030s (Glory Facade & Grand Stairway)

While the structural shell is complete, interior artistry, finishing details, and the construction of the massive Glory Facade—the church’s main entrance—will continue well into the next decade.

Furthermore, the next phase of construction remains highly controversial among locals. The proposed grand stairway leading up to the main entrance would require a massive urban redevelopment plan that neighbors fear could displace anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 residents from their homes.

The Path to Sainthood

For many in attendance on Wednesday, the day was less about urban planning politics and more about spiritual culmination. As the angelic sounds of Europe’s oldest boys’ choir from the nearby Montserrat Abbey echoed through the basilica’s tree-like stone columns, the focus remained on the man who started it all.

With the Vatican having recently upgraded Gaudí’s status to “venerable” last year, local Catholics are hopeful that the completion of his masterwork will accelerate his path to beatification and eventual sainthood.

For a building funded entirely by private donations and tourist ticket sales, the completion of the central tower proves that Gaudí’s radical gamble on time, faith, and stone has finally paid off.
