Etihad Airways Launches “Pet Cabin” Service: Dogs and Cats Now Fly in the Cabin on Select Routes

News Aggregator Report using Etihad Media Release
 ABU DHABI, 2026 —14 June,2026
Etihad Airways has expanded its animal travel options with a new service allowing passengers to bring small dogs and cats into the main cabin on select flights, ending the previous policy that required all pets to travel in the cargo hold. The service, branded “Pet in Cabin”, rolled out in phases through late 2025 and is now available on most Etihad flights between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport and destinations in the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Australia.
How “Pet in Cabin” Operates
Etihad’s policy is modeled on other international carriers but with stricter space and behavior rules: Eligibility + booking Only cats and dogs are allowed. Birds, reptiles, and other animals must still travel as cargo.
Pets must be at least 12 weeks old, fully vaccinated, and healthy.
Booking is mandatory and done by phone — you can’t add a pet online. Etihad limits the number of pets per flight, usually 2-4 in economy and 1-2 in business/first, to manage space and allergies.
The service costs USD $300-$500 one-way depending on route and cabin class.
Carrier requirements Pets must stay in a soft-sided, ventilated carrier for the entire flight, including taxi, takeoff, landing, and turbulence.
Max dimensions: 40cm x 30cm x 25cm for under-seat economy. The carrier + pet combined cannot exceed 8kg for economy, 12kg for business/first.
Carriers must fit completely under the seat in front of you. No “lap pets” or letting the animal out during flight. Seating rules This is where Etihad addresses the “barking dog” concern.
Passengers with pets are: Seated in window seats only, last rows of each cabin section Blocked from bulkhead rows, exit rows, and seats near passengers who declared allergies Separated from other pet carriers by at least 1 empty seat when possible
Flight crew can relocate passengers if there’s a conflict.
If you book a seat and don’t want to sit near animals, Etihad says you can request a seat change at booking or check-in, subject to availability.
In-flight rules
The pet must remain in the carrier and under the seat at all times. Feeding, removing the animal, or letting it roam is not allowed. Crew can deny boarding if the animal shows aggression or excessive noise during pre-flight checks. For longer flights, Etihad advises passengers to use calming aids approved by a vet, but sedatives are not recommended due to air pressure risks.
Documentation Standard pet passport, vaccination certificates, and import permits for the destination country are still required.
Etihad staff check documents at check-in.
Passenger Reaction + How It Affects Others
The change has split travelers. Pet owners say it reduces stress for animals and avoids risks of cargo hold travel.
“Animal welfare groups have praised the move as safer than cargo. Non-pet owners have raised concerns about noise, allergies, and space.”
Etihad says the window-seat + limited-numbers rule is designed to minimize impact. Crew are trained to manage disturbances, and passengers who are severely allergic can request reseating.
Unlike some airlines, Etihad does not allow “emotional support animals” in cabin without meeting the same carrier + weight rules. Only trained service dogs for disabilities travel under separate rules and are not required to stay in carriers.
Bottom line: If you book Etihad and don’t want to sit next to a barking dog, choose an aisle or middle seat away from the last rows, or request no-pet seating at check-in.
If you’re traveling with a pet, book early — spots fill fast, especially on Australia-UK routes.

*Rules vary by country due to quarantine laws, so check your destination requirements 6+ weeks before flying.
