Aussies plan to increase their travel spend this summer
Media Release Sydney 16 December.2025
Australians are leading the world in travel enthusiasm, with new research showing they are preparing to spend more on their holidays this summer than any other nation.
The research comes from the 2025 Europ Assistance Holiday Barometer[1], a global survey of 21,000 respondents across 21 countries, commissioned by leading global assistance provider Europ Assistance, the parent company of award-winning Australian travel insurance provider Insure&Go.

The research reveals that eight in 10 Australians say they feel enthusiastic about travelling this year, making them among the most motivated travellers globally. The report also found that 61 per cent of Australians intend to take a holiday this summer, a proportion far above the European average (47%), helping cement Australia’s reputation as one of the world’s most travel-hungry countries.
David Mayo, Commercial & Marketing Director at Insure&Go, says:
“Australians see holidays as a way to recharge, reconnect and explore. Even with cost-of-living pressures, we know that travel is one of the last things people are willing to give up. This year’s data confirms that Australians are prioritising their holidays, perhaps like never before.”
The research also highlights just how much Australians are investing in their trips. The average holiday budget has increased to approximately $5,180, which is well above the European average of AUD $3,411
Aussies are also taking longer breaks, with the average trip duration being 2.1 weeks, outpacing both Europeans and Americans. Extended getaways are also being more popular, with 14 per cent planning three-week holidays (compared with 12% of Europeans and just 7% of Americans) and a further 14% are planning four weeks or more (versus 7% of Europeans and 5% of Americans).
“We’re seeing longer trips, bigger budgets and more variety in destinations,” says David. “From quick escapes to Asia through to extended European family holidays, Australians are determined to make the most of every opportunity to travel.”

When it comes to choosing their holidays, Australians are almost evenly split, with 41 per cent preferring domestic getaways, while 45 per cent opt for international escapes.
Beach destinations and city breaks are the most popular choices, each attracting nearly half of travellers. Nature exploration also features strongly, with over half (54%) saying they want to spend their holidays in the outdoors.
David says that this indicates a robust summer ahead for the travel industry. “Travel is back in full force. This holiday season, we expect Australians to travel more, spend more and be away longer. The enthusiasm we’re seeing will not only benefit airlines and hotels, but also the many small businesses and communities across Australia and overseas that depend on tourism.”
