BEIJING – President Donald Trump arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport on Wednesday evening, marking the start of a pivotal state visit aimed at navigating a complex web of trade tensions and regional security concerns. This visit is his first to China during his second presidency and the first by a U.S. leader in nearly nine years.

Air Force One touched down at exactly 8:08 p.m. local time, a timing widely viewed by observers as a calculated nod to Chinese culture, where the number eight is associated with prosperity. Upon descending the stairs, President Trump was greeted by a high-level Chinese delegation led by Vice President Han Zheng and Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu. The reception featured a full military honor guard and band, along with an enthusiastic welcome from approximately 300 young people waving American and Chinese flags. Key U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador David Perdue, were also on hand for the arrival.

The President is accompanied by a significant delegation of American business titans, signaling a heavy focus on economic negotiations. Notable figures joining the trip include Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Apple’s Tim Cook, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, and Larry Fink of BlackRock. Family members Eric and Lara Trump also joined the visit in a personal capacity.

Following a quiet first night at the Four Seasons Beijing, President Trump is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday morning. The summit comes on the heels of a 2025 defined by intense tariff disputes and a fragile “Busan truce” reached last October.

The agenda for the meeting is extensive. President Trump is expected to press for economic liberalization and greater access for U.S. firms in Chinese markets, while both leaders will likely discuss regional stability and the impact of the ongoing conflict with Iran on global energy markets. Additionally, reports suggest that the Chinese side will focus heavily on diplomatic rhetoric and arms sales concerning Taiwan.

Before departing the U.S., President Trump took to Truth Social to express optimism, referring to China as an “amazing country” and emphasizing the importance of the two superpowers maintaining a productive relationship. The visit is scheduled to conclude on May 15, with many viewing the mere occurrence of the summit as a significant step toward stabilizing the volatile U.S.-China relationship.
