Students from 30 Hills schools collect 5,700 donations for people sleeping rough
Media Release posted Tuesday 28 April,2026
Students from 30 schools across Sydney’s Hills District are stepping up to support people experiencing homelessness this winter through the annual Blanket and Beanie Appeal (BABA), a student-led initiative making a real impact in the local community.
Founded in 2016, the appeal is run entirely by students who organise, promote and deliver the collection of warm clothing for people sleeping rough. What started as a small school effort has grown into one of the Hills District’s most meaningful youth-led community campaigns.

In 2025, students from 25 schools coordinated more than 5,700 donations, which were distributed to 10 frontline organisations with the help of over 80 volunteers.
Now in 2026, the initiative is expanding again, with 30 schools involved and a goal of collecting more than 5,000 essential winter items for those doing it tough.
Beyond the numbers, the appeal highlights the leadership and initiative of local students who are taking practical action to support vulnerable members of their community during the coldest months of the year.
