Staying Masterclass: 50/1 Outsider Changing of the guard Stuns in 2026 Sydney Cup

In one of the most remarkable boilovers in the history of the Group 1 $2 million Sydney Cup (3200m), the Kris Lees-trained Changingoftheguard ($51) delivered a front-running masterclass to claim the two-mile classic at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The Winning Move

Under a superb tactical ride by Jason Collett, the seven-year-old Irish-bred stayer took control from the jump. Despite the “pedestrian” pace noted by rival jockeys, Collett expertly rated the horse, slowing the sectionals down to 14 seconds mid-race to conserve energy for the final sprint.

As the field turned for home, Changingoftheguard refused to throw in the towel, digging deep to hold off a late surge from the Chris Waller-trained Soul Of Spain ($8) by a half-neck. Highland Bling ($17) finished a close third.

A Career Milestone for Lees

The victory marked exactly 20 years since trainer Kris Lees won his first Sydney Cup with the legendary County Tyrone.

“When County Tyrone won the Sydney Cup it was one of my biggest thrills in racing. But I would have to say this is just as big a thrill.” — Kris Lees

Lees revealed the win was the result of a long-term plan involving the application of blinkers, which had been intentionally saved for this specific race after the horse’s bold run in the Melbourne Cup last year.

Owner’s Legend Continues

The win adds another trophy to the cabinet of Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams. This marks his fifth Sydney Cup victory, joining previous champions Gallante (2016), Mourayan (2013), Gallic (2007), and Major Drive (1987). Nick Williams praised Lees as the “nicest guy in racing” following the victory.
