World News Aggregator/Posted Monday 27 April,2026

WASHINGTON —Sunday 26 April Chaos gripped the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday night when a gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint, forcing the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump and several high-ranking administration officials.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:36 p.m. ET at the Washington Hilton. According to the Secret Service and witness reports, a man identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, charged the main security screening area outside the ballroom.

Details of the Incident

Witnesses described a scene of sudden panic as gunshots echoed through the venue.

  • The Breach: Allen reportedly rushed the magnetometer checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

  • The Gunfire: Law enforcement officials confirmed that gunfire was exchanged. One Secret Service agent was struck in their ballistic vest; the agent is expected to make a full recovery.

  • The Apprehension: Despite the gunfire, the suspect was not hit by bullets but was tackled to the ground by security personnel and taken into custody.

Panic in the Ballroom

Inside the ballroom, where approximately 2,600 guests were seated for dinner, the sound of “four or five gunshots” sparked immediate alarm.

People were screaming, ‘Get down, get down!'” one attendee noted. “We ducked under the tables, knocking over wine glasses and plates. It was total confusion until the Secret Service swarmed the stage.”

President Trump, who was seated at the head table, was surrounded by agents within seconds and ushered to a secure location. Vice President J.D. Vance, First Lady Melania Trump, and Cabinet members including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were also quickly evacuated.

Aftermath and Investigation

President Trump addressed the nation from the White House later that evening, still dressed in his tuxedo. He praised the “brave” actions of the Secret Service and described the suspect as a “lone wolf.”

Suspect Information Details
Name Cole Tomas Allen
Origin Torrance, California
Weapons Recovered Mossberg shotgun, .38-caliber handgun, knives
Legal Status Charged with assault on a federal officer and firearm felonies

The FBI is currently investigating the motive behind the attack. Preliminary findings suggest Allen may have traveled from California via train specifically to target administration officials.

The White House Correspondents’ Association has announced that the dinner, which was cancelled mid-event, will be rescheduled within the next 30 days. This was the first time President Trump had attended the event during his current term.
