The Crown & The Cellar: A Diplomatic Masterclass at Royal Gala in  Canberra

Connoisseur Magazine Report by A.Ritenis dated 16 March,2026

The selection for the Royal Gala is particularly noteworthy. The menu was designed to showcase Australia’s “cool-climate” elegance, moving away from the heavy-set reds of the past toward the refined, structured styles that both the Danish King and an Australian-born Queen would appreciate.

Here are the details on the trade outcomes and the cellar selection from the Canberra summit:

*Strategic Outcomes: The “Green Bridge”

The meetings between the King, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet resulted in the signing of the “Copenhagen-Canberra Green Energy Declaration.” This agreement facilitates:

-Offshore Wind Knowledge Transfer: Denmark will provide technical advisors to help fast-track Australia’s offshore wind zones in the Hunter and Gippsland regions.

-Sustainable Agriculture: A partnership between Danish biotech and Australian farmers to reduce methane emissions in livestock.

-The “Mary Scholarship”: A new academic exchange program focusing on environmental law and social policy between the University of Tasmania and the University of Copenhagen.

The Royal Gala Cellar Selection Dinner

For the gala dinner at Parliament House, the sommelier curated a list that bridged the gap between Queen Mary’s Tasmanian heritage and the King’s European palate (noting his family’s own history with the Chateau de Cayx in Cahors).
1. The Aperitif: House of Arras ‘Grand Vintage’ 2015 (Tasmania)

A nod to the Queen’s home state. This is widely considered Australia’s finest sparkling, rivaling top-tier French Champagne with its 7 years on lees and incredible brioche complexity.
2. The White: Clonakilla Chardonnay 2023 (Canberra District)

Since the event was in Canberra, the local hero was a must. This Chardonnay is lean and mineral-driven—more in the style of a Jean Marc Brocard Chablis than a buttery New World wine.

3. The Red: Henschke ‘Mount Edelstone’ Shiraz 2018 (Eden Valley)

A choice for a King who appreciates history. Coming from 100-year-old vines, this Shiraz offers the elegance and “black pepper” spice of a Northern Rhône Syrah, avoiding the over-extracted jamminess of lower-altitude regions.
4. The Digestif: Sullivans Cove ‘French Oak’ Single Malt (Tasmania)

To finish the evening, a world-champion Tasmanian whisky was served. Its rich, oily texture and dried fruit notes serve as a perfect Australian counterpart to a fine Armagnac.

The Royal couple has now arrived in Sydney. The King is expected to visit Barangaroo to discuss urban sustainability, while the Queen will attend a private luncheon.
