RESTORATION OF THE HISTORIC PARLIAMENT OF NSW FAÇADE UNVEILED IN TIME FOR FIRST SITTING WEEK OF 2024

Macquarie Street reclaims historic charm as Parliament House adopts a Georgian inspired colour scheme harmonising with The Mint after a century.

After months of meticulous restoration efforts, the distinguished façades of the Parliament of NSW have been unveiled, reclaiming their historic allure and marking a significant achievement in the preservation of Australia’s oldest public building, in time for the first sitting week of 2024.

The 200-year-old Rum Hospital has emerged from scaffolding after undergoing extensive critical maintenance, boasting a restoration to its original Georgian inspired colour scheme.

The Hon. Ben Franklin MLC, President of the NSW Legislative Council, extends a warm invitation to visitors from near and far to witness this transformation first-hand.

“NSW Parliament House has once again reclaimed its position as the jewel of Macquarie Street, matching visually with its historic neighbours, as a major destination in Sydney and indeed NSW.”

“This heritage restoration project, one of the largest in Australia, unfolded while parliamentary activities continued, including sittings, elections, and school and public programs.”

“The restoration follows the original colour palette, featuring custom paint colours ‘White Rum’ and ‘Divisional Sand’,'” Mr Franklin said.

The Hon. Greg Piper MP, Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly, emphasised the importance of the critical maintenance work undertaken to ensure the safety and longevity of the building.

“We take pride in delivering this vital restoration project ahead of schedule,” Mr Piper said.

The Parliament of NSW invites the public to be among the first to capture photographs with the renewed façade, to tour the historic precinct or even dine at the award-winning Strangers’ Restaurant.

“Come and visit us for a free tour of the parliament with your family or school and be one of the first to capture history with a photo in front of the new façade.”

“While construction efforts will continue at NSW Parliament House until mid-2024, rest assured that parliamentary sittings will remain unaffected by the ongoing restoration work,” Mr Piper said.
