The NSW Opposition is concerned by media reports last night regarding an alleged mould cluster at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 2024/25.
Hospital whistleblowers and senior Health sources told 7News that at least two children, both oncology patients, have died at the hospital since December 2024 with invasive fungal infections.
Shadow Minister for Health Sarah Mitchell encouraged Ryan Park to be honest with the public about the severity of this mould cluster at Westmead Hospital.
“The Minister must restore public confidence in the sector and guarantee the safety of all patients and staff in hospitals across NSW,” Mrs Mitchell said.
The news comes as confidential documents reveal the true extent of mould at Westmead.
A risk report at the hospital details frequent ongoing water leaks in the ceiling of the Birth Unit:
“Water leaking through electrical light fittings etc. This occurs every time it rains. Recent downpour caused the closure of 3 birthing rooms seriously compromising capacity for the community. Organisation reputation may come in to disrepute.”
“Reducing capacity of Birthing Service. Community lose trust in organisational value of service. Increasing costs to the service through damage to equipment/resources.
WH&S risks – falling ceiling tiles electrocution risks to staff.”
Mrs Mitchell said the NSW public health system is literally falling apart on Ryan Park’s watch and he must accept responsibility for the growing list of failures.
