“L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, the original Naples pizzeria with real Italian waiters ,..who are so Italian you could be in Rome  not Pitt st ,…sais Wine and Food Editor Axel Ritenis”

The famous L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, the original Naples pizzeria further immortalisedby Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love, is officially opening its first Australian restaurant in Sydney this week.

With 155 years of heritage and more than 80 locations worldwide, Da Michele will bring an authentic piece of Naples to Sydney’s dining scene.

“Sydney, the wait for true pizza is finally over,” says Da Michele representative Giuseppe Costagliola.

“For years, Australians have travelled to Naples for the real deal, or have been eating overpriced fakes. Now, we’ve brought the same ingredients and craftsmanship to Australia, so locals can experience the real pizza that started it all.”

Bringing a Taste of Naples to Sydney

Since 1870, Da Michele has built its name on simplicity, tradition and excellence. The original Naples shop is widely regarded as the global benchmark for true pizza, and still family-owned by the founder’s descendants.Bringing Da Michele to Australia has been a passion project years in the making.

Every element, from imported Italian tomatoes and Agerola Fiordilatte cheese, to specialist equipment and tools, has been meticulously sourced from Naples to guarantee authenticity.

“Many pizzerias claim to serve ‘Neapolitan style,’ but no others can live up to the original,” adds Costagliola.“We’ve brought everything from our hometown: the oven, the artisans, the vitality of Naples, so that every bite can transport you there in an instant.”

The Neapolitan pizza craft is more than culinary, it’s cultural. Recognised by UNESCO in 2017 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the pizzaiolo’s art form celebrates centuries of tradition, skill and social ritual. Da Michele’s devotion to this lineage ensures diners in Sydney will experience something both delicious and historically significant.

Despite its legendary reputation, Da Michele has chosen to keep pricing fair in Sydney too.

With their iconic pizzas costing just $18, the brand is proving that authentic Italian hospitality doesn’t need a luxury price tag.

“When it comes to food, luxury is about authenticity, not about money!” concludes Costagliola.

“Our promise is simple: real pizza, popular prices, and the warmth of true Neapolitan hospitality,” adds Alfredo, Da Michele pizza-chef.

From the moment guests step inside, they’ll be transported to Naples; hand- stretched dough, perfectly blistered crusts, and the unmistakable aroma of Italian food.
The menu will highlight Da Michele’s iconic Margherita and Marinara, along with a selection of antipasti, pastas and desserts that reflect the genuine soul of
Naples. Limoncello from Sorrento is going to be proposed as the perfect digestive.

Da Michele Sydney aims to become a fixture of the city’s dining culture, not just a novelty, but a genuine destination for lovers of Italian food and tradition.

L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele officially opens at 50 Pitt Street, Sydney CBD on Friday, 05 December, 2025.

The venue will be fully licensed and open seven days a week, 11:30am to 11:30pm.
