Hay St Market at Paddy’s is bringing Sydney a taste of Italian summer with Buon Ferragosto, a three-day cultural and culinary street party inspired by one of Italy’s
most cherished holidays.
From the 15th to 17th August, the 3,000-square-metre market will be reimagined as a buzzing Italian piazza filled with music, colour, celebration and the warmth of shared meals. Across the weekend, visitors can explore a Ferragosto-themed offering from a mix of market favourites and roaming carts, mwith dishes that draw on regional recipes, seasonal ingredients and festive Italian flair.
Originally marking the height of the Italian summer harvest, Ferragosto is a national day of rest, feasting, and family. At Hay St Market, it’s being brought to life through bold, generous Italian cooking and festive community energy. Experience the sights, smells and flavours of Italy, from golden fried arancini and Tuscan-style porchetta rolls, to desserts made for indulgence like bomboloni, cannoli and scoop-after-scoop of creamy gelato.
Signature dishes on offer include:
● Schiacciata-stuffed porchetta rolls with salsa verde and crackling
● Saffron arancini filled with fior di latte and sugo di pomodoro
● Tiramisu trays, piped-to-order cannoli and fresh Bomboloni dusted with cinnamon sugar
● Hand-rolled gnocchi and slow-cooked stews served over polenta
Visitors can sip a spritz or scoop gelato to the sounds of a live Italian band performing Saturday 16th August, 12pm–3pm, the perfect pairing to a lazy afternoon wander through the market.
Hay St Market Culinary Director, George Diamond, has led the menu curation in collaboration with HaySt Market traders, championing regional Italian recipes and local produce.
“Ferragosto is joyful, generous and full of flavour. We’ve worked to capture that spirit in every bite, with seasonal dishes, heritage street food, and classic favourites designed to bring people together,” said Diamond.
Whether you’re planning a full food crawl or just swinging by for a taste, Buon Ferragosto at Hay St Market is set to be a standout winter moment and a vibrant slice of Italy in the heart of Haymarket.
