A Seafood and Carving Masterclass at Carousel Buffet at Royal Plaza on Scotts

At $72 for the Carousel Buffet Lunch at Royal Plaza on Scotts, one departs not just satisfied, but genuinely impressed by the value proposition. In a city where premium dining can often be punctuated by the “sting” of heavy wine taxes, Carousel manages to strike a rare balance between abundance and genuine culinary quality.

The Seafood Bounty

The seafood spread performs the heavy lifting here, anchored by a freshness that is often elusive in high-volume buffets. The chilled cooked prawns were notably sweet and firm, while the plump scallops retained a delicate texture, tasting remarkably fresh as if shucked to order.

The smoked and baked salmon selections were equally excellent, particularly when paired with the traditional accompaniments of capers and zesty sauces. I also curated a commendable plate of sushi and sashimi; while the selection stays within the classic repertoire rather than the “wildly premium,” the execution was clean and professional. The tuna, in particular, was a standout for its color and clarity.

A Note on the Cellar

To navigate the seafood courses, I opted for a glass of Sileni NZ Sauvignon Blanc. It was crisp, refreshing, and cut through the richness of the shellfish beautifully—a smart, albeit necessary, indulgence given Singapore’s steep alcohol duties.

The Carving Station & Hot Mains

Transitioning to the more robust offerings, the carving station proved to be a highlight. The roast beef was served a genuine medium-rare—rosy, tender, and expertly seasoned. It found its perfect companions in a rich, golden Potato Dauphinoise and a side of creamy spinach that channeled the soul of a classic high-end steakhouse. To complement the red meat, I switched to the house French Cabernet, which proved to be a perfectly serviceable and structured partner for the beef.

The Final Flourish

While the dessert spread is expansive, the bread and butter pudding stole the show. It was decadent and custardy without being cloying, providing a warm, comforting conclusion to the meal. Paired with a robust, well-extracted Americano, it was the ideal palate cleanser.

From my Notes :

“After clearing a couple of seafood plates I doubled down on the carving station where the medium rare roast beef (US Strip Loin)was genuinely rosy, tender, and properly seasoned, and I loaded up on dauphinoise-style onionized  potatoes that were rich and golden, plus a side of creamy spinach that tasted like steakhouse comfort food en France! Naturally I switched to a French Cabernet, the house pour, which was perfectly serviceable with the beef .Desserts sealed the deal: there was a wide spread but the standout for me was a decadent bread and butter pudding, warm, custardy, and not too sweet, which I finished off with a solid Americano. All in all it’s a damn good meal for $72 when you factor in the range and quality, and the hotel itself helped. Royal Plaza on Scotts isn’t super luxurious in a six-star sense, but it’s a comfortable, well-run 5-star that consistently gets rave reviews on Booking.com and Trip Advisor for service and cleanliness, and the location is a big selling point with Orchard Road shopping literally on the doorstep. If you’re a seafood and roast lover who wants to linger over lunch without blowing $150, Carousel hits the sweet spot.” ‎

The Verdict

Royal Plaza on Scotts may not lean into the “six-star” opulence of some of its neighbors, but it excels as a polished, well-run 5-star establishment. Its reputation on platforms like Booking.com and TripAdvisor for impeccable service and cleanliness is well-deserved, and the location—with the Orchard Road shopping precinct literally on the doorstep—is unbeatable.

For the seafood enthusiast or the roast aficionado looking for a lingering, high-quality lunch without the $150 price tag, Carousel hits the absolute sweet spot of Singaporean dining.
