Chris Bowen Assures Nation on Fuel Reserves Amid Fresh US-Iran Strikes

News Desk/Article based on the Media Release/ Transcript issued by the Minister for Energy ,Chris Bowen, on Saturday 27 June,2026

Sydney — The federal government has moved to reassure Australians over the nation’s fuel supply, revealing that local stockpiles remain robust despite fresh military strikes by the United States on Iran.

Speaking at a weekly fuel update on Saturday, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen declared that Australia’s strategic reserves are higher today than they were when Iran was first bombed earlier this year, dismissing calls from political opponents for fuel rationing.

According to the latest data, Australia currently holds 44 days worth of petrol (steady from last week), 37 days worth of diesel, and 29 days worth of jet fuel.

“These numbers are well within the range of good, solid supply,” Minister Bowen said. “We have 48 ships on the water to Australia as we speak, and 3.6 billion litres of fuel locked in to be delivered over the next four weeks.”

Australia's Current Fuel Reserves (Days of Supply)
 Petrol: 44 days (Unchanged)
 Diesel: 37 days (Slightly down)
Jet Fuel: 29 days (Slightly down)
On the Water: 48 tankers / 3.6 billion litres scheduled over 4 weeks

The update comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions following new US airstrikes on Iran, which Washington claims violated a recent ceasefire agreement. Bowen urged calm and resisted mounting pressure to alter domestic economic relief, signaling that the government will stick to its plan to phase out the temporary fuel excise cut by August.

“We made the announcement just last week about a gradual return to more normal arrangements, and I think that’s appropriate,” Bowen said.

Fuel Tankers Waiting Offshore as Storage Reaches Capacity

In an unusual twist to the supply crunch, Minister Bowen revealed that some international fuel tankers are currently stuck waiting off the Australian coastline simply because local storage facilities are completely full.

When questioned about a specific tanker—the Grand Winner Five, which has reportedly been sitting idle off the coast of Sydney for weeks—the Minister could not confirm its status but noted the bottleneck was a symptom of a well-stocked network.

“I do know we are dealing with strength because a lot of our storage is full,” Bowen explained. “A lot of tankers are waiting for storage to become available to come into port to dock… that just shows how well Australia is dealing with this international crisis.”

Through Export Finance Australia (EFA) emergency powers triggered in late March, the government has ordered roughly 800 million litres of diesel and several hundred million litres of jet fuel to date.

However, consumers are unlikely to see relief at the airport. Despite a recent dip in global wholesale jet fuel prices, aviation experts warn flight ticket prices are unlikely to drop. Bowen acknowledged the economic sting, noting that “international turbulence is going to have economic implications,” but called on airlines to ensure their pricing remains fair.

UNRWA Funding & Venezuelan Earthquake Response

The press conference also touched on major international developments:

  • UNRWA Terror Allegations: Confronted with a new US agency report alleging that 70 workers with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza have links to Hamas, Bowen defended Australia’s $20 million in annual funding. Aligning Australia with 50 other donor nations, Bowen stated that UNRWA is the “only humanitarian agency for Palestine” and noted that the agency has promised to aggressively investigate the claims.

  • Venezuela Earthquake: Following the catastrophic earthquakes in Venezuela, Bowen confirmed that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is urgently working to track down citizens. “We would expect that there would be Australians in Venezuela and impacted given the size of the tragedy,” Bowen said, promising regular consular updates.
