SYDNEY — The 73rd Sydney Film Festival (SFF) has officially concluded its 12-day run, cementing its place in the record books as the highest-selling festival in the event’s seven-decade history. Announcing the box office milestone from the stage during last night’s Closing Night Ceremony, organizers confirmed that SFF has achieved back-to-back record-breaking years, fueled by an insatiable local appetite for world cinema.

The evening culminated in the presentation of the prestigious Sydney Film Prize, the flagship accolade of the festival’s Official Competition. Celebrated Russian auteur Andrey Zvyagintsev accepted the award on stage for his latest feature, Minotaur.

The international jury, spearheaded by acclaimed Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, praised the film’s timely and visceral thematic weight.

“This is a film about something which unfortunately will never go out of style, which is power used to crush people,” the jury noted in an official statement. “And it’s all done in a way that feels strongly Hitchcockian, strongly cinematic.”

The victory headlined a massive $200,000 total prize pool distributed to local and international filmmakers over the closing weekend. Following the formal proceedings, the festival officially lowered its curtains with a packed screening of the highly anticipated drama Paper Tiger, arriving in Sydney direct from its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.

Major Award Winners

Beyond the official competition, the festival recognized groundbreaking achievements across documentary, Indigenous storytelling, and environmental filmmaking. Each recipient walked away with the festival’s signature mesmeric swirl trophy, individually handmade in Sydney by iconic design partners Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy of Dinosaur Designs.

Documentary Australia Award

  • Winner: Time and Tide

  • Jury Commentary: “This year’s award goes to a film that challenged our ideas of what documentary can be and what it can do. This transcendent work delivered raw and authentic emotion, demonstrating the capacity of filmmaking not only to capture a process of healing, but also to create the conditions for it.”

First Nations Award

  • Winner: Ceremony

  • Jury Commentary: “Filmed across ten years, and utilizing a range of immersive storytelling techniques, Ceremony is a deeply layered, complex and intimate journey into the history and landscape of the Nuxalk people. A moving declaration of sovereignty that leaves you championing for the hearts and homeland of her community.”

Sustainable Future Award

  • Winner: Sukundimi Walks Before Me

  • Jury Commentary: “An incredibly important and timely documentary depicting the immense power of grassroots resistance in a world deeply impacted by colonialism and corporate greed. Masterfully told with reverence and respect for the majestic Sepik River flowing throughout the film.”

Dendy Awards and Encore Screenings

The weekend also shone a bright spotlight on emerging domestic talent. Following the dedicated Dendy Awards ceremony on Saturday night—which celebrated five distinct accolades for Australian short filmmaking—the winners were brought back to the stage on Sunday evening to be acknowledged by the closing night audience.

For film enthusiasts who missed out during the initial 12-day rush, organizers confirmed that a curated selection of the festival’s most popular and sold-out titles will return for limited “Back by Popular Demand” encore screenings over the coming days.

The festival has also opened its official 2026 red carpet photo gallery online and launched its annual audience survey in partnership with strategic sponsor Destination NSW, offering participants a chance to win a Flexipass 10 for the 2027 season.
