STATE SMASHES ILLICIT TOBACCO RING: 100 STORES SHUT IN NSW CRACKDOWN

By Staff Reporter Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

In a sweeping enforcement blitz that has spanned from the Northern Beaches to the Western Suburbs, NSW Health inspectors have intensified their efforts to disrupt the supply of illegal nicotine products. The latest figures reveal that 30 stores were shuttered in the last ten days alone, resulting in the seizure of nearly three-quarters of a million illicit cigarettes.

The crackdown comes as federal tobacco excise increases threaten to widen the price gap between legal and black-market products—a gap the government fears will drive more consumers toward unregulated, often dangerous, illicit goods.

NSW Minister for Health, Ryan Park, issued a stern warning to those attempting to bypass the state’s rigorous new licensing and control laws.

“The recent closures should serve as a reminder for those people in the community who are doing the wrong thing that we are serious and they will be prosecuted,” Minister Park said.

“Despite the increase in the federal tobacco excise this week potentially bolstering the illicit market, we’re getting on with the job of cleaning up our communities and suburbs, doing our part to crack down on illicit tobacco.”

The enforcement is backed by a new, confronting health campaign titled Mutations. The campaign, which features graphic computer-generated imagery of tumours growing on cigarettes, is currently being rolled out across high-traffic hubs including Central and Parramatta stations.

Chief Cancer Officer NSW, Professor Tracey O’Brien AM, echoed the Minister’s urgency, noting that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the state, claiming roughly 6,600 lives annually.

With 30 additional inspectors now on the ground, the government has signaled that the current wave of closures is only the beginning. Under the strengthened legislation, the Local Court now holds the power to extend these 90-day “short-term” closures to full-year bans for repeat offenders.
