Golden Era: Australia Shatters Records at Milano Cortina 2026

LIVIGNO, Italy — Australia has officially entered “rarified air” at the 2026 Winter Olympics, securing its most successful Games in history. With the competition only at its midpoint, the green and gold have already amassed three gold medals, surpassing the previous record of two set in Vancouver 16 years ago.

The Historic Haul

Leading the charge is Jakara Anthony, who etched her name into the history books on Saturday night by winning the first-ever Olympic gold medal in Dual Moguls. The victory makes her the first Australian winter athlete to win two career gold medals, following her individual success in Beijing 2022.

Anthony’s redemption came after a heartbreaking eighth-place finish in the singles moguls earlier in the week. “It’s been such an emotional rollercoaster,” Anthony said, draped in the Australian flag. “I’ve got one more crack at this, and to go about it this way was just phenomenal.”

The gold rush began earlier in the week with:

  • Cooper Woods: Claimed Australia’s first gold of the Games in the Men’s Moguls, upsetting legend Mikael Kingsbury.

  • Josie Baff: Secured a thrilling victory in the Women’s Snowboard Cross, edging out former champion Eva Adamczykova by a mere 0.04 seconds.

A Legacy of Underdogs

The current success builds on a small but legendary list of Australian winter champions. Before the 2026 surge, Australia had only seven Winter Olympic golds in its entire history.

Year Athlete Sport Significance
2002 Steven Bradbury Short Track Speed Skating Australia’s first-ever Winter Gold.
2002 Alisa Camplin Freestyle Skiing (Aerials) First female gold, won with fractured ankles.
2006 Dale Begg-Smith Freestyle Skiing (Moguls) Dominant performance as World No. 1.
2010 Torah Bright Snowboarding (Halfpipe) Recovered from concussions to win gold.
2010 Lydia Lassila Freestyle Skiing (Aerials) Overcame two ACL ruptures to reach the podium.
2022 Jakara Anthony Freestyle Skiing (Moguls) Australia’s first gold in 12 years.

“Unprecedented Times”

Chef de Mission and former gold medalist Alisa Camplin hailed the performance as “mind-blowing,” noting that the team has already surpassed the total medal value of any previous Games. Along with the three golds, Scotty James added a silver in the Men’s Halfpipe, becoming Australia’s most decorated Winter Olympian with three total medals (two silver, one bronze).

With more events scheduled in the coming week—including the Men’s Dual Moguls and Women’s Monobob—the Australian team is well-positioned to extend what is already a landmark performance in winter sports.
