VAUCLUSE, SYDNEY – The glittering waters of Sydney’s exclusive Eastern Suburbs turned into a scene of primal horror on Sunday afternoon, as a 12-year-old boy was brutally mauled by a large shark at the ironically named Shark Beach.

The teenage victim is currently in a “fight for his life” at Sydney Children’s Hospital after a suspected Bull Shark tore into both of his legs while he was enjoying a summer afternoon with friends at Nielsen Park.

‘A Perfect Storm’ of Horror

The tragedy unfolded around 4:20 PM near the popular “Jump Rock” at Steele Point. Witnesses describe a scene of pure chaos as the boy leapt from a six-meter ledge into the brackish, murky water. Police believe recent heavy rains, which filled the harbour with sediment and freshwater, combined with the splashing of the teenagers, created a “perfect storm” for an ambush.”It was a horrendous scene. He was bitten almost the moment he hit the water,” said NSW Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty.

Heroic Rescue in Blood-Stained Waters

In an act of breathtaking bravery, the boy’s friends did not flee. As the water turned red, one mate reportedly dove back into the surf to drag the unconscious 12-year-old onto the rocks.

Marine Area Command officers arrived within minutes, performing a “textbook recovery.” Officers applied two emergency medical tourniquets to the boy’s mangled legs and performed CPR on the deck of a police vessel as it raced across the harbour to Rose Bay Wharf.

Sydney on High Alert

This attack is the first of a terrifying triple-strike that has gripped the city over the last 48 hours:

  • Sunday, 4:20 PM: 12-year-old boy mauled at Vaucluse (Critical).

  • Monday, Noon: 11-year-old surfer’s board bitten at Dee Why (Escaped uninjured).

  • Monday, 6:20 PM: Surfer in his 20s mauled at North Steyne, Manly (Critical).

The shark net at Nielsen Park had only recently been repaired in December after being shredded by storms last year, but the victim was reportedly swimming just outside the protected enclosure.

LATEST UPDATES

  • Beach Closures: All Northern Beaches and several Harbour swimming spots remain strictly closed.

  • Condition Report: The boy remains in the Intensive Care Unit following emergency surgery.

  • The Predator: Authorities suspect a Bull Shark, a species known for its aggression and ability to thrive in the low-visibility, brackish waters of Sydney Harbour.
