Yarra Yering selected Winery of the Year-Halliday Wine Companion 2022 Results

The three highest-scoring wines of the Halliday Wine Companion 2022 results each achieved  99 points. That is  the Penfolds Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay 2018 picking up both White Wine of the Year and sharing the podium for Chardonnay of the Year; the Yalumba The Caley Cabernet Shiraz 2016 was selected as the  Cabernet Shiraz of the Year and in the Fortified wine category and Seppeltsfield 100 Year Old Para Vintage Tawny 1921, won the Fortified of the Year.

Judging for the Halliday Wine Companion Awards was conducted by the full and revitalised Halliday Tasting Panel, led by renowned wine critic and vigneron, Editor-at-Large James Halliday AM and the celebrated and award-winning wine expert Tyson Stelzer as Chief Editor.

Back in March, all seven tasters – which also includes Jeni Port, Ned Goodwin MW, Erin Larkin, Jane Faulkner and Tony Love – came together to nominate candidates from their respective regions for all awards categories.

“The panel has jointly pinpointed the top-rated Australian wines, winemakers, wineries and viticulturalists from over 9,000 entrants, through a series of tastings, round-table discussions and collaborative decisions.”

White Wine of the Year

Penfolds Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay 2018 (various locations) – 99 points

Selectively sourcing only the very best chardonnay fruit from cool climate regions, coupled with sensitive winemaking, the style continues to evolve.

“A wine of substantial flavour coupled with a textural dynamic; mouth-filling, engulfing flavour profile comprising white stone fruits – just ripe nectarine and freshly-sliced peach, and the most subtle adornment of oak and zesty acidity give the wine great well defined mid palate structure and depth with a great finish and persistence on the palate.”

Red Wine of the Year

Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 2019 98 points

“Fruit power is the hallmark of this blend, dark berry fruits and some sage adding a background herbal lift. Christmas cake mixed spice and a whisper of oak; all in balance. Beautiful fruit, a bright acid drive and tannins that form a solid foundation for a long future. Brooding but not intimidating, always exciting to watch evolve.”
