STATEMENT ON SUPPORT FOR WORKERS AND BUSINESSES DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN
We have been heartened to see the people of Greater Sydney and NSW respond to the recent COVID-19 restrictions.
Streets are empty, people are wearing masks, staying home wherever possible, and getting tested in record numbers.
Most people are doing the right thing, and we could not be more proud.
We have said that NSW Labor supports the NSW Government’s COVID-19 measures, based on the health advice, to help keep us all safe.
But this means there will be a tough financial impact on workers and businesses over the coming weeks.
The economic cost of a lockdown can be up to $850 million a week. This will have a real human impact on millions of people across Greater Sydney and NSW.
So we ask the NSW Government to consider the following:
1. Make sure Commonwealth emergency payments to workers are rolled out as quickly as possible.
2. Immediately commit to a grants package for affected small businesses – similar to that deployed at the start of the pandemic and again in January – and provide details of the scope and criteria of the program, to provide certainty to businesses that sufficient support will be there for them on the other side.
3. Provide support to those who risk falling between the cracks in coming weeks – like casual workers and those sleeping rough or on the streets.
Any measures in these areas will get immediate endorsement from me and my NSW Labor team.
If we’re all in this together, we need to make sure we look after each other too.
We can beat this if we all work together. Remember – follow the health advice, mask up, get vaccinated, and let’s beat this virus.
