STATEMENT ON LATEST COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS AND LOCKDOWN
NSW Labor welcomes the decisions of the last few days from the NSW Government on further COVID19 restrictions, based on the advice of the Chief Health Officer.
These are difficult days for everyone in Greater Sydney and the regions and those captured by the stay at home orders.
The NSW Government is taking necessary actions based on the health advice but these restrictions have very real human impacts.
We’ve got family plans and holidays cancelled, weddings that now can’t go ahead, workers wondering where the next pay is coming from, businesses forced to close down, while frontline health and emergency service workers do everything possible to protect us and keep us safe.
What we need right now is the Government focusing on getting the job done.
Now is not the time for politics and NSW Labor will continue to provide support to the Government during these dark days.
Today’s restrictions extend the stay at home orders to all of Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong, from 6pm today until 9 July. That includes people who have been in the Greater Sydney region on or after 21 June, who must also follow the stay at home orders for 14 days since leaving Greater Sydney.
For those of us captured in these restrictions, we all know the four reasons to leave home:
* Shopping for food or other essentials
* Medical care or compassionate needs (including to get vaccinated unless you have been identified as a close contact)
* Essential work or education, where you cannot do this from home
I urge everyone to follow the health advice and stick to these restrictions. I know this will be tough for many people, but we’ve been here before, and I know we can beat this if we all work together.
But especially at times like this, we also have to make sure that no one is left behind. If we’re all in this together, we need to make sure we look after each other too.
Let’s focus on masking up, getting vaccinated, and beating this virus.
