-Sydney Harbour Bridge to Close for Public Assembly, Major Transport Disruptions Expected

Sydney,Sunday 03 August,2025

Sydney is bracing for significant transport disruptions today as the iconic Harbour Bridge is set to close for a planned public assembly. NSW Police and Transport for NSW have issued a joint warning, advising the public to delay non-essential travel and expect extensive delays across the city’s road and public transport network.

The closure of all north and southbound lanes on the Harbour Bridge is scheduled from approximately 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, though this timeframe may be subject to change. The closure is to facilitate a mobile assembly, with a large police presence on hand to ensure public safety and manage the event.

In a statement, Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Adam Johnson, emphasized that the safety of the community is the police’s highest priority. “Police will have a high-visibility presence at the operation today and will work with participants to ensure there are no breaches of the peace,” he said. He added that unlawful or dangerous behavior will not be tolerated, and police will take appropriate action against anyone who commits a criminal offense.

The ripple effects of the bridge closure are expected to be far-reaching, as outlined by Transport for NSW Executive Director Operations Management, Craig Moran.

“He warned that the disruption will extend to the public transport and road network, with extensive queues anticipated at the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and major connecting corridors such as the Western Distributor, Anzac Bridge, Rozelle Interchange, Eastern Distributor, Gore Hill Freeway, and Lane Cove Tunnel.”

Motorists are strongly advised to allow for a significant amount of additional journey time, especially for critical travel such as to the airport.

In addition to the road closures, commuters are also facing a series of public transport inconveniences:

  • Sydney Metro: Services will not be running between Tallawong and Sydenham due to scheduled trackwork.
  • Light Rail: The L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford light rail services will truncate at Town Hall, with no services operating between Town Hall and Circular Quay.
  • Bus Services: Several bus routes will be diverted to accommodate road closures in the CBD.

Transport for NSW will be deploying extra staff to key hubs like Town Hall, Central, and City Circle stations to manage crowds and assist passengers.

The public is urged to check livetraffic.com and transportnsw.info for the latest updates on road and public transport conditions before they travel.
