On Wednesday 29 October, Single O is inviting Sydneysiders to ‘Give a Puck’ for the planet at a special event celebrating the launch of its new sustainability initiative with social enterprise Reground – NSW’s first dedicated coffee waste diversion project. Coffee lovers who bring their reusable cup to Single O Surry Hills will receive a free takeaway coffee, along with a ‘Giving a Puck’ reusable cup filled with coffee compost enriched soil and a planted coffee tree seed to grow at home.
The Giving a Puck project will enable cafes and restaurants across NSW to participate in an easy-to-access coffee waste collection service, helping businesses significantly reduce their environmental footprint. In the first five years, Single O and Reground expect to divert an estimated 3 million kilograms of coffee from landfill – equivalent to 85,000,000 cups of coffee.

“Spent grounds are the coffee industry’s hidden waste problem. We so often think about the impact of single-use cups, but not the spent coffee puck from our morning latte that goes to landfill,” says Mike Brabant, CEO, Single O. “We’re fired up to be changing that – this project gives everyday coffee drinkers a simple way to get involved and help create a more sustainable future for coffee – it’s as simple as supporting your local cafe that Gives a Puck.”
A number of leading Sydney cafes have already signed on to the project, including Happyfield, Soulmate Coffee, Superfreak, The Bakery on Glenayr, Three Blue Ducks and Bills.
