Portsea local Lelde McCoy says that Mornington Peninsula wineries cater for everyone

“There are so many different experiences to enjoy from a fun family day out to a girls’ getaway or a
romantic lunch or dinner.Wherever you go,.. the views across vineyards or water are expansive. It’s truly a spectacular part of
Victoria.

Lelde’s recommendations are:
For a Casual lunch:
Foxey’s Hangout at Red Hill for a light lunch of shared plates. Try the burratas, spiced meatballs or
mushroom sausage rolls. Indoors or out.
The Piazza at Montalto has a stylish covered courtyard or you can sit amongst the kitchen garden
beds. Pizza and salads are on the menu.
High end lunch:
The restaurants at Montalto, Paringa Estate and Ten Minutes by Tractor all have beautiful
restaurants,  overlooking the undulating slopes of their vineyards.  All offer memorable dining
experiences with innovative menus.
Immersive experience:
-Montalto offers private picnics at ten beautiful and secluded sites throughout the property,
exclusively for groups of 2 – 8. Sit or walk amongst the vines or view the 30 permanent sculptures
sited throughout the grounds.

Portsea Estate (pictured above) overlooking Bass Strait offers private tours by appointment only for between 4 – 12.
Will Ross has taken the family winery into the second generation. Back from Bordeaux and with his
Wine MBA he is an engaging host. For tours Call Will on 0439 029 646 or email

Port Philip Estate is an award winning architectural landmark. Designed by Wood / Marsh
Architecture as a contemporary wine chateau it has a light-filled Dining Room and Cellar Door which
open to an expansive outdoor deck with spectacular views.

*“Located at the furthest tip of the Mornington Peninsula, the estate is a truly unique property facing Bass Straight near the famous Back Beach of Mornington. The property had been owned for generations by the family of Vigneron and Proprietor Warwick Ross, who established their own winery on the site in 2010. Warwick is also well-known for his other passion – filmmaking, in particular, the sensational documentary Red Obsession (2013). Winemaker Tim Elphick has nearly two decades experience both overseas, in famous regions such as Barolo, and in Australia in Mornington and Yarra Valley.”

Lelde’s Top  5 wine finds from the region are :

1. Portsea Estate Pinot Noir

REVIEWS/TASTING NOTES

The 2019 Estate Pinot Noir was made with 15% whole bunch fermentation, enhancing aromatic lift and tannin. The stems add a touch of star anise spice which compliments the the wines’ aromas of maraschino cherry, fresh liquorice, strawberries and our typical maritime savoury character unique to this  site.

2. Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rose

REVIEWS : Campbell Mattinson The Winefront, October 2021

“It has the most gorgeous copper hue and while it’s distinctly savoury around the edges it’s also deliciously refreshing in a fruit-driven way. Redcurrant and strawberry with earth, vanilla cream, orange blossom and dried herb highlights. It’s a delightful wine to drink: tart, fruity, savoury, energetic and precise, all at once.”

3. Ten Minutes by Tractor Estate Chardonnay 2019

REVIEWS/TASTING NOTES

“The wines from this estate have become classier and classier with each passing year. Indeed, it’s fast heading for elite status.”An exotic nose of curry leaf and spice with hints of honeydew and flint form the backbone of this multiple site Chardonnay.  While the acid is tight, it creates a strong drive through the palate that is met by bursts of citrus peel with a fine finish.

4. 2019 Cri de Coeur Chardonnay Crittendens

REVIEWS

“The 2019 vintage experienced favourable mild to warm weather which allowed fruit to achieve optimal flavour ripeness. This wine was whole bunch pressed with a wild yeast ferment and spent 11 months in French oak barriques (50% new).Subtle florals and citrus lead to white stone fruit. Pure fruited and finessed with acid steering the palate. A beautiful, elegant wine.”

5.  Montalto Pennon Hill Chardonnay

REVIEWS

“Lemon and Lime sherbet, white peach, chalk and slate, apple blossom, together with some roasted almonds and hazelnuts. There’s some brioche and gentle oak aromas just to round out the package. A collage of citrus and stone fruit flavours are supported by quenching acidity, together with a mineral lick and generous texture from the lees work. This is a delicious Chardonnay with hallmark Pennon Hill qualities exhibiting great varietal definition and regional expression.”

Lelde’s Modus Operandi:

Advance bookings are a must and for wineries that don’t take reservations, Lelde’s advice is to get
