Pizzini ‘s Wine Experience in the King Valley

Written by Aksel Ritenis

Pizzini’s Wine Experience  in the King Valley

Pizzini are makers of Italian wine varieties and are based in King Valley, Victoria. The King Valley has established itself as the home of Italian grape varieties in Australia. The shallow, rocky soils on the gently undulating slopes make perfect sites for Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. While the more fertile zones along the valley floor leading to the King River grow fragrant Brachetto and crisp Prosecco. The wines are made by Joel Pizzini, the vineyards managed by Alfred Pizzini.

The Pizzinis  are Italian at heart inspired by growing, making, eating, drinking and sharing riendship.  They  planted their  vines more than 30 years ago and continue to grow the finest Italian varietal wines

Alfred Pizzini first sought out and planted Italian varietals such as Sangiovese and Nebbiolo in the King Valley to reconnect with his northern Italian roots but also to share these wonderfully savoury wines with friends and family in Australia.

These Italian varietals go “hand in hand” with good food and good company – it is easy to picture an Italian family table – joyous and loud, laden with delicious dishes from “cucina italiana” to share and complete with good wine and plenty of laughter.

All about Pinot Grigio

“Some see Pinot Grigio as a simple wine to grow, make and drink. Yes, it’s easy enough to make a basic Pinot Grigio, but if you aim a little higher, or a lot higher as we do, then that’s not the case – for me blending our Pinot Grigio each year is one of my biggest, yet most enjoyable challenges.”

The Pizzini Pinot Grigio is sourced from fourteen of the Whitfield district’s most meticulous grape growers. They  make each batch as a separate, finished wine before trying and blending  a number of combinations that vary the different components.

“Over time the winemaker has noted  the characteristics of the grapes sourced from each grower which range from mineral, crisp acid, lemon, salty and lemonade through to riper apple, crunchy pear, pear drop and pear blossom. This knowledge helps us decide when to pick each parcel of grapes and to shape the Pizzini house style of Pinot Grigio.”

The objective  when blending the Pinot Grigio is to find a seamless balance of all of these characteristics, resulting in a refreshing yet complex wine that we hope you will enjoy drinking as much as I enjoy making it.

NV Pizzini Prosecco

Prosecco: dry, lemony, and bubbling, is Italy’s answer to refreshing, well-made, sparkling wine. Created from Prosecco grapes in the northern Veneto region of Italy in the foothills of the Alps; We plant Prosecco on the cool King Valley floor. Prosecco is light, affordable & fun.

2020 Pizzini Pinot Grigio

The nose offers up an abundance of wildflowers, quince and ripe, yellow pear. The palate is crisp, tangy and taut, showing Nashi pear and quince with a drizzle of lime. There is bright acid crunch right the way through.

2020 Pizzini Riesling

Aromatics include citrus blossom, white petal flowers, sweet floral notes and dried herbs. The palate is crisp, fresh and taut with lemon and lime flavours. It has tight acidity and lovely fruit balance with a lingering, limey finish.

2019 Pizzini Rosetta

The wine is a blush pink colour with salmon hues. The nose exudes notes of strawberry, red cherry and raspberry with subtle herbal undertones. The palate is dry and crisp with fresh cherry and plum flavours and soft gentle tannins. The palate is long and persistent. This wine is best served with spicy salt and pepper calamari, or in the sun in your garden.

2017 Pizzini Sangiovese Pietra Rossa

Pietra Rossa is our new name for the well known Pizzini Sangiovese, and with the 2017 vintage we celebrate the 21st release of this wine. Mouth-watering aromas of red berries, spice, sour cherries and earthy undertones up front. As the wine opens up there are savoury notes which follow onto the classic Sangiovese palate of vibrant cherry and plum flavours. It is juicy, fleshy and drinkable.

2015 Pizzini Nebbiolo

Classic Nebbiolo colour, garnet with a deep brick red hue. On the nose, the wine displays typical rose petal and violet charactesr with subtle star anise notes. The palate is deep, structured and powerful, all elements we pride ourselves on when working with special varietal. Rich red fruits, spiced plums and red liquorice lead us to solid earthy tannins, and a remarkably bright and generous finish. Perfect with a winter duck ragout.

Editor of the Sydney Times, Axel Ritenis tasting one of  Australia’s best Nebbiolo wines

2015 Pizzini Coronamento Nebbiolo

The wine is rich brick red with plum coloured reflections.  Classic new world Nebbiolo youthful essence of dried rose petals and violets backed with earthy tar aromatics..  The wine is very sweet smelling of dried flowers, spiced plums, ripe wild red berries, star armies and cloves.  The palate is full of sweet mouth-filling tannins.  There is plenty of concentred fruit, but requires a little aeration before releasing echoes of wild red berries, plums leather, spices, cloves and tar, with a very intense finish.
