Opera Australia completes Donizetti Tudor trilogy with Roberto Devereux in Concert

After the success of Anna Bolena in 2019 and Maria Stuarda in Concert in 2022, Opera Australia will finally perform the third instalment of this compelling trilogy of operas composed by Donizetti with Roberto Devereux in Concert this March.

Making her Australian debut, Italian soprano Roberta Mantegna will sing Elisabetta, which she performed to great acclaim with Washington Concert Opera at the end of last year. Critics noted “she was born to sing bel canto” and her performance brought the house down – The Georgetowner.

Italian tenor Valerio Borgioni returns to Sydney to sing the titular role of Roberto Devereux, after making his Australian debut in Maria Stuarda in 2022. Borgioni’s Earl of Leicester was praised by Limelight for his high level of bel canto skill at such a young age.

Completing the dramatic love triangle is Opera Australia principal soprano Jane Ede as Sara, the Duchess of Nottingham. Jane makes her role debut in this concert after reprising her nuanced Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni earlier this year.

The Duke of Nottingham, Roberto’s best friend and Sara’s husband, will be sung by Italian baritone Giorgio Cauduro who will join the cast after performing the role of Michonnet in OA’s Australian premiere of Rosetta Cucchi’s Adriana Lecouvreur over 20 February – 7 March.

The leading cast will be rounded out by four accomplished OA singers all making role debuts; Iain Henderson, Richard Anderson, Anthony Mackey and Ryan Sharp. The renowned Opera Australia Chorus will also appear onstage to support the cast.

The luxurious score of Roberto Devereux will be masterfully conducted by Italian conductor Andrea Sanguineti, who will also make his Australian debut. Maestro Sanguineti was recently appointed Music Director of the Aalto-Musiktheater and the Essen Philharmonic Choir starting with the 2023/24 season.

This rarely performed work excels in concert form, enabling audiences to focus on the glorious melodies and epic story without the distraction of staging. Featuring some of Donizetti’s finest musical works, Roberto Devereux includes the Queen’s showstopping final aria ‘Vivi, in grato, a lei accanto’ which always mesmerises audiences.

Loosely based on the true story of the 2^nd Earl of Essex, an influential figure who served the court of Queen Elizabeth I, this retelling presents a dramatic spin on history. Straying greatly from the life of the original Robert Devereux, the sensational plot centres around the heated love triangle, lust and betrayal among Elisabetta, Roberto and Sara.

Julia Gutman wins Archibald Prize 2023 for portrait of MontaigneSydney-based artist Julia Gutman has won the Archibald Prize 2023 and $100,000 for her portrait, Head in the sky, feet on the ground, of singer-songwriter Montaigne.The 29-year-old first-time Archibald Prize finalist is one of the youngest winners in the 102-year-history of the prize. Gutman’s win also marks the 13th time the Archibald Prize has been awarded to a woman (11th woman to win) since it began in 1921.Gutman was delighted and amazed when Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand phoned to tell her that she had won this year’s Archibald Prize.‘I’m so elated and overwhelmed to have won. Shocked, dumbfounded, but very happy. It’s honestly completely surreal. I’m so grateful to be working at a time when young female voices are heard’, said Gutman.Montaigne and I have been friends for a few years and there is a lot of alignment in our practices; we are both interested in creating our own forms and approaches rather than strictly adhering to any one tradition.‘Montaigne’s work defies genres, while her mercurial soprano has become an indelible part of the fabric of Australian music.’Gutman is a multi-disciplinary artist who reuses found textiles to produce painted ‘patchworks’ that merge personal and collective histories to explore themes of femininity, intimacy and memory. NSW Government to push to raise SCG Precinct concert capThe NSW Government has directed Venues NSW to seek regulatory approval to lift the SCG Precinct concert cap from an average of four major events per year to 20.Currently the SCG Precinct and the new $828 million Sydney Football Stadium is only allowed to host four concerts per year.This restriction has meant that Venues NSW has been unable to host international artists such as the Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and potentially Beyoncé.Each international artist is estimated to bring $5-7.5 million per show of economic benefit into the NSW economy, supporting thousands of jobs.At a time when the local economy is recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, this cap as it currently stands is costing NSW businesses $40-60 million a year.The cap has also resulted in a reduction of important major cultural events, with key events such as the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras After Party forced to shift to a smaller venue.Minister Kamper has directed Venues NSW to undertake the necessary planning and environmental applications to modify the historic restrictions.The NSW Government will ensure the consultation is comprehensive and will invite all community stakeholders to participate, including local community groups, major operators and surrounding landowners, as well as neighbours and local businesses.This will bring the SCG precinct in line with many comparable stadiums around Australia and the world.If the application, the cap could be lifted as soon as October this year.NSW Premier, Chris Minns said:“Sydney is a global city and we should be able to host global acts from around the world.”“The cap means NSW is missing out on millions of dollars a year in economic activity, and the tourism and jobs it brings with it.“In lifting this concert cap to 20 per year, we could bring in an additional $1.3 billion for NSW businesses over the lifetime of the stadium.“We need to utilise our entertainment venues to their fullest potential and show to the rest of Australia and the world, that NSW is now open for business.” ...
