Outrage as Pauline Hanson Wears Burka in Parliament for Second Time

National News Aggregator posted 25 November,2025

Sydney, Australia – Anti-immigration One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson has sparked widespread condemnation and brought proceedings to a halt in the Senate after wearing a burka into the chamber on Monday. The controversial stunt was a protest against the Senate’s rejection of her long-campaigned-for bill to ban full face coverings in public.

Senator Hanson, from Queensland, refused to remove the garment, which covers the face and body, shortly after other lawmakers blocked her attempt to introduce the private member’s bill. This is the second time she has worn the Muslim garment in parliament, having done so previously in 2017 while also calling for a national ban.

Senators Condemn ‘Blatant Racism’

The action drew immediate and fierce criticism from across the political spectrum.

Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi, a Muslim representative from New South Wales, publicly accused her colleague of “blatant racism.”

“This is a racist senator, displaying blatant racism,” Senator Faruqi stated.

Independent Senator Fatima Payman, from Western Australia, also weighed in, labelling the stunt as “disgraceful.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Leader of the Government in the Senate, strongly condemned the behaviour as “disrespectful” to all Australians.

“We represent in our states, people of every faith, of every faith of all backgrounds. And we should do so decently,” Senator Wong said, adding that Hanson was “not worthy of a member of the Australian Senate.”

Senator Wong subsequently moved a motion to suspend Senator Hanson for failing to remove the garment, halting proceedings temporarily.

Hanson: ‘Ban the Burka’

In a post on her Facebook page following the incident, Senator Hanson reiterated her provocative stance, writing: “If they don’t want me wearing it – ban the burka.”

The move is consistent with the Senator’s history of controversial comments regarding Islam and immigration. In 2016, she was heavily criticised for her maiden speech to the Australian Senate, where she stated the country was in danger of being “swamped by Muslims”—a comment that echoed her infamous 1996 speech warning the country was in danger of being “swamped by Asians.”
