Ledecky retains women’s 800m free title
Katie Ledecky (USA) remains the favourite for this women’s 800m free final despite her mixed meet so far.
Through 250m, she has opened up about a body length on Ariarne Titmus (AUS).
The lead is slightly over one second at 350, coming back at halfway. Titmus looked like she got a good push on the turn at 400 but Ledecky is holding on to this.
We have already seen Titmus kick hard and late to win the 400, so Ledecky will know she cannot rest on her laurels. It’s the two of them at the front with Simona Quadarella (ITA) some way back in third right now.
Ledecky up by a second and a half at 550, and that lead is up even more at 600 and 650 – 2.24 the gap. Will we see that Titmus kick?
The American has a clear lead as she takes the bell for the last 100. Her lead is up to 2.43 seconds. It looks like Ledecky has this. Turning for the last length, the gap is still over two seconds.
Titmus trying hard to come back, but Ledecky will hold her off.
Gold for Ledecky in 8:12.57, silver to Titmus, bronze to Quadarella.
