LABOR MOVES TO BAN PROPERTY DEVELOPERS FROM CABINET

“Recent ICAC revelations show the influence of property developers goes right up to the very top of the Berejiklian Government. This Government puts property developers before people and it’s time we limited their influence,” Ms McKay said.

NSW Labor is continuing its fight to restore integrity in Government with a move to ban property developers from serving in the State’s Cabinet.

The NSW Labor Leader Jodi McKay said standards in NSW politics must be higher:

These matters cut to the heart of integrity in public office and its clear urgent reform is needed. Unfortunately, the actions of the Premier and her Ministers have undermined the important work we do in Parliament and we must rectify that.”

Ms McKay has given notice of further integrity legislation to limit the influence of developers in Parliament by prohibiting them from Cabinet.

“MP’s have a job to do. Their job is to represent their community, not using their position of power to their own benefit. That is why property developers must be prohibited from serving in Cabinet,” Ms McKay said.

It’s among a string of sweeping integrity measures introduced by Labor following recent evidence given to the ICAC about former Liberal MP Daryl Maguire. It came to light Mr Maguire accepted commissions from property developers with the full knowledge and support of the Premier.

Labor has successfully changed the law to make it illegal for Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries to receive commissions or payments from prohibited donors including property developers.

“Recent ICAC revelations show the influence of property developers goes right up to the very top of the Berejiklian Government. This Government puts property developers before people and it’s time we limited their influence,” Ms McKay said.
