COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: NSW WORKERS NEED JOBKEEPER NOW
JobKeeper should be introduced for NSW workers impacted by the current lockdown, NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns said today.
“NSW cannot have an extended lockdown without JobKeeper in place. Without it, this health crisis will become a social and economic crisis.
“The Prime Minister must not turn his back on the nation’s biggest state during this crisis.
“JobKeeper would inject a billion dollars a week into the NSW to keep our economy going. Without this support the fallout from this lockdown will last longer and cut deeper,” Mr Minns said.
Shadow Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said small businesses and their employees are starting a third week of lockdown today without any support from the NSW or Commonwealth Governments.
“The last lockdown extension was announced five says ago and the NSW Government’s small business grants aren’t paid until next Monday.”
“If we do go into a prolonged lockdown then everyone in NSW needs to know both the State and Federal Governments have got their back.”
“We can’t allow small businesses to fail when they have done what was asked of them to keep our community safe,” Mr Mookhey said.
Mr Minns also called for employers to do the right thing and allow hundreds of thousands of tradespeople to get COVID-19 tested in the next few days.
NSW Health has recommended construction workers moving across multiple work sites get tested immediately.
“My concern is many tradies will face pressure from their employers if they try to take time off work to get the test. I would ask all employers to do the right thing and send their employees off for testing first thing Monday morning.”
“To paraphrase the great Bob Hawke – no boss should sack a tradie for taking a COVID test,” Mr Minns said.
