Sydney Marathon necessitates Major Road Closures
In addition to the athletic achievements, the Sydney Marathon caused significant road closures and traffic disruptions across the city. The event, which drew over 50,000 runners and 300,000 spectators, necessitated extensive closures to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the race.
Major Road Closures
In addition to the athletic achievements, the Sydney Marathon caused significant road closures and traffic disruptions across the city. The event, which drew over 50,000 runners and 300,000 spectators, necessitated extensive closures to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the race.
The most notable closure was the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Western Distributor, which were shut in both directions from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. This completely cut off direct road access between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Anzac Bridge. Other major roads affected for extended periods included:
- Macquarie Street and roads in The Domain until 4 p.m.
- Major roads from the city to Moore Park, including sections of Oxford Street, Park Street, and Flinders Street, were closed until 3:30 p.m.
- Anzac Parade from Moore Park to Kingsford was closed from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Traffic and Public Transport Disruptions
Motorists were strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel and to use alternative routes and public transport. The Cross City Tunnel was a critical detour, operating toll-free from 5 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to facilitate east-west travel across the city. Despite this, significant delays were expected.
Public transport was also heavily impacted:
- Buses and light rail services were affected by the road closures, with many services being diverted or terminating early. For instance, L3 Kingsford line services did not operate from Kingsford for a significant part of the day.
- Trains and metro services were the recommended mode of transport for participants and spectators, with additional early morning services running to accommodate the event’s start time.
Special Event Clearways
In addition to road closures, special event clearways were enforced along and around the marathon course from as early as midnight the night before. Vehicles left in these no-parking zones were towed, and a fee was applied. Residents in affected areas were urged to check signage carefully to avoid penalties.
