Aussies urged to check their smiles and their diaries during Dental Health Week

Aussies urged to check their smiles and their diaries during Dental Health Week

As the nation continues to navigate a period of intermittent lockdowns and other COVID-19 interruptions, Australians are being encouraged to check their calendars to ensure they have a dental check-up planned for the coming months.

This message is being reinforced during Dental Health Week (2 – 8 August), an annual awareness campaign aimed at promoting better oral health practices. In 2021 it comes at a time where many people’s diet and oral health routines have been affected by the challenges of COVID-19.

Bupa Head Dentist, Cathryn Madden said it’s vital that people of all ages visit the dentist regularly to protect their oral and general health with data suggesting over 60 per cent of adults haven’t seen a dentist for at least 2 years[1].

“There is no doubt that looking after your teeth and gums enhances your general health with chronic issues such as diabetes and heart disease both being linked to gum inflammation and periodontal disease. Your dentist will also carry out an oral cancer screening at your check-up.

“Dental Health Week acts as a great annual reminder for people to stop and think about whether they have seen a dentist during the calendar year, and if they haven’t, to book in for the near future[2]. Regular appointments with your friendly local dentist are a vital part of maintaining your oral health,” said Dr Madden.

Dr Madden also encouraged Australians to focus on maintaining positive oral health practices at home such as brushing twice a day, flossing and eating a healthy diet. At present 1 in 3 adults rate their oral health as ‘poor’ or ‘very poor.[3]

“If like many Australians, you have been consuming more alcohol or junk food during the COVID-19 pandemic now is a good time to make a resolution to make some healthy diet changes that will help you keep your smile for life!” said Dr Madden.
