The Art Gallery of New South Wales is celebrating 40 years hosting ARTEXPRESS, a showcase of outstanding artworks developed by young artists from across New South Wales for the art-making component of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination in Visual Arts.The annual showcase, which was first exhibited at the Art Gallery in 1983, continues to provide insight into Year 12 students’ creativity, and the social and political issues important to them. This year’s exhibition explores topics that impact young Australians today with common themes across the exhibition including family and personal identity, ideas of home and place, and environmental concerns. Works draw from a range of media, including ceramics, designed objects, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre and time-based forms.Opening to the public tomorrow at the Art Gallery, ARTEXPRESS 2023 features works by 43 students. These were chosen from over 8028 student’s works submitted for the 2022 HSC examination in Visual Arts. The students featured in the Art Gallery exhibition represent metropolitan and regional areas, government and non-government schools showcasing the diversity of artistic talent from right across the state.Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said: ‘ARTEXPRESS is a celebration of visual arts students’ commitment to their practical HSC examination and is a testament to the valuable role that NSW visual arts education plays in the development of visual literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving techniques. These exemplary bodies of work are the culmination of several years of study, guided by quality teaching and a rigorous visual arts syllabus.’Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Arts, Regional Youth and Tourism Ben Franklin said: ‘It is demonstrative of the significance of the Art Gallery, recently expanded with a new building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architects, SANAA, that it has hosted the hugely popular ARTEXPRESS exhibition for 40 years. Our 2022 exhibiting HSC visual arts students will join an ARTEXPRESS student alumni spanning 40 years, which includes accomplished artists Ben Quilty (1991), David Griggs (1994), Jasper Knight (1997), Julie Fragar (1995), Tom Polo (2002), Bhenji Ra (2009) and Louise Zhang (2009).’Art Gallery of NSW director Michael Brand said: ‘The Art Gallery is committed to highlighting scholarship and excellence in art education through annual programs such as ARTEXPRESS. As the state’s leading visual arts institution, it is important that we create pathways for the next generation of emerging artists by shining a light on their artistic practice. My congratulations to this year’s students and I encourage them to continue engaging with the arts, and to continue to think creatively in the future.’

Since 1989, the Art Gallery has been the principal venue for ARTEXPRESS, displaying bodies of work by students from across NSW. Julia Gutman wins Archibald Prize 2023 for portrait of MontaigneSydney-based artist Julia Gutman has won the Archibald Prize 2023 and $100,000 for her portrait, Head in the sky, feet on the ground, of singer-songwriter Montaigne.The 29-year-old first-time Archibald Prize finalist is one of the youngest winners in the 102-year-history of the prize. Gutman’s win also marks the 13th time the Archibald Prize has been awarded to a woman (11th woman to win) since it began in 1921.Gutman was delighted and amazed when Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand phoned to tell her that she had won this year’s Archibald Prize.‘I’m so elated and overwhelmed to have won. Shocked, dumbfounded, but very happy. It’s honestly completely surreal. I’m so grateful to be working at a time when young female voices are heard’, said Gutman.Montaigne and I have been friends for a few years and there is a lot of alignment in our practices; we are both interested in creating our own forms and approaches rather than strictly adhering to any one tradition.‘Montaigne’s work defies genres, while her mercurial soprano has become an indelible part of the fabric of Australian music.’Gutman is a multi-disciplinary artist who reuses found textiles to produce painted ‘patchworks’ that merge personal and collective histories to explore themes of femininity, intimacy and memory. She was included in the Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, was a finalist in the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize and was awarded the Create NSW 2020 NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship.Montaigne is a Sydney-based singer who has become an important figure on the Australian indie music scene. Art Gallery of NSW director Michael Brand said Gutman’s painting was selected as one of 57 finalists and then as the winner from 949 entries for the Archibald Prize.‘Like many contemporary artists, Julia is interested in the expanded field of painting. In this remarkable tender portrait of a young musician who is making her way in a tough business, we see an intimacy and vulnerability that is truly compelling. NSW Government to push to raise SCG Precinct concert capThe NSW Government has directed Venues NSW to seek regulatory approval to lift the SCG Precinct concert cap from an average of four major events per year to 20.Currently the SCG Precinct and the new $828 million Sydney Football Stadium is only allowed to host four concerts per year.This restriction has meant that Venues NSW has been unable to host international artists such as the Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and potentially Beyoncé.Each international artist is estimated to bring $5-7.5 million per show of economic benefit into the NSW economy, supporting thousands of jobs.At a time when the local economy is recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, this cap as it currently stands is costing NSW businesses $40-60 million a year.The cap has also resulted in a reduction of important major cultural events, with key events such as the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras After Party forced to shift to a smaller venue.Minister Kamper has directed Venues NSW to undertake the necessary planning and environmental applications to modify the historic restrictions.The NSW Government will ensure the consultation is comprehensive and will invite all community stakeholders to participate, including local community groups, major operators and surrounding landowners, as well as neighbours and local businesses.This will bring the SCG precinct in line with many comparable stadiums around Australia and the world.If the application, the cap could be lifted as soon as October this year.NSW Premier, Chris Minns said:“Sydney is a global city and we should be able to host global acts from around the world.”“The cap means NSW is missing out on millions of dollars a year in economic activity, and the tourism and jobs it brings with it.“In lifting this concert cap to 20 per year, we could bring in an additional $1.3 billion for NSW businesses over the lifetime of the stadium.“We need to utilise our entertainment venues to their fullest potential and show to the rest of Australia and the world, that NSW is now open for business.” ...
