North Sydney Olympic Pool: The Final Countdown to Reopening

Local governement News 22 january,2026

After years of delays and anticipation, the redevelopment of the iconic North Sydney Olympic Pool is entering its final stages. With the project transitioning from a construction site to a functioning aquatic center, the local community is finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

Here is the latest update on the pool’s status as of January 2026.

Opening Timeline and Completion

The project is currently in the “testing and commissioning” phase. While the construction contractor, Icon, originally forecasted Practical Completion for early January, independent programmers suggest a hand-over to North Sydney Council is more likely by mid-February 2026.

Once the Council takes possession, an additional 2 to 3 months of operational readiness will be required. This includes:

  • Staff training and safety drills.

  • Finalizing IT and ticketing systems.

  • Ensuring all health and safety certifications are active.

Expected Public Opening: Late April or May 2026.

Water Filling and System Testing

One of the most visual signs of progress is the filling of the 50-meter outdoor pool. This process is critical for:

  • Weight Load Testing: Ensuring the structural integrity of the pool shell under the massive weight of the water.

  • Water Treatment Commissioning: Testing the filtration and chemical balance systems to ensure the water is crystal clear and safe for swimmers.

  • Leak Detection: Rigorous monitoring of water levels to ensure the new membrane and tiling are perfectly sealed.

The 25-meter indoor pool and leisure pools are following closely behind, with tiling and waterproofing reaching completion this month.

Upgraded Facilities

The $120M+ redevelopment transforms the site into a world-class wellness hub while preserving its heritage character. Key features include:

  • Olympic-Sized 50m Pool: Now fitted with customized “velocity advantage” starting blocks.

  • New Indoor Facilities: A 25m warm water pool, a dedicated kids’ splash play area, and a leisure pool.

  • Wellness Center: A state-of-the-art gym, sauna, and steam room (which have already been successfully commissioned).

  • Spectator Grandstand: A 970-seat grandstand covered by a modern, lightweight ETFE roofing system for weather protection.

  • Creche: On-site childcare facilities for gym and pool users.

Dining and Restaurants

The pool precinct will once again become a culinary destination, though with a mix of familiar names and new management strategies.

Venue Status Details
Ripples Milsons Point Reopening Early 2026 The flagship restaurant on Olympic Boulevard is being completely reimagined with a “coastal ease” aesthetic, featuring timber accents and pearl tones.
Aqua Dining Reopening 2026 Located above the pool, this high-end venue will return to offer its famous panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
Pool Café & Gelato Bar Council-Run In a recent shift, North Sydney Council has decided to run the internal café and gelato bar in-house for the first 12 months after failing to secure a private operator.

NB: The Council-run café will ensure that affordable food and drink options are available immediately upon the pool’s public opening.
