Adelaide, Australia—The sands of Adelaide witnessed history on Sunday as Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova fought through a grueling three-set battle to be crowned the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Champions. Their 2-1 (21-15, 15-21, 15-11) victory over the United States’ formidable pair, Kristen Nuss and Taryn Brasher, secured Latvia’s first-ever World Championship title in either gender, completing an extraordinary and emotional journey for the fifth-seeded duo.

🇱🇻 The Golden Tie-Breaker

Inspired by their dominant straight-sets semi-final victory, Graudina and Samoilova came out firing, taking the first set decisively, 21-15. They were clinical and aggressive, looking set to sweep their second major opponent in as many days.

However, the third-seeded American pair, Nuss and Brasher—known for their resilience and consistent defense—rallied in the second set. Capitalizing on a slight dip in Latvian serving accuracy and forcing errors, the Americans leveled the match with a strong 21-15 win, setting up a winner-take-all tie-breaker.

In the final set, it was the Latvians who found another gear. While the Americans battled hard to stay within striking distance, the Latvians maintained superior consistency, with Samoilova’s perfect reception and defense setting up high-value attacks. The historic gold was sealed with an off-the-block shot, securing the 15-11 victory and sparking jubilant celebrations on the court.

“I can’t believe it!” an emotional Tina Graudina told VBTV after the game. “The game was so close. We constantly lost to them all the times that we had played. But today everything happened as we wanted. It’s amazing!”

Samoilova added: “We are the luckiest and the happiest persons in the world right now.”

The key statistics underscored the back-and-forth nature of the match: Samoilova topped the scoring chart with an impressive 26 points (including three aces), while Graudina added 21 points (including a kill block), matching the 21 points put up by the American’s Brasher.

🇸🇪 Åhman and Hellvig Secure All-Swedish Men’s Gold

Earlier in the evening, the men’s final delivered the promised all-Scandinavian spectacle, as the reigning Olympic Champions, David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig (3rd seed), claimed Sweden’s first-ever World Championship gold by defeating their younger compatriots, Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson (7th seed).

The more experienced pair persevered through two fiercely contested sets, winning 2-0 with set scores of 25-23, 21-19. The young World Championship debutantes, Hölting Nilsson (20) and Andersson (19), pushed the veterans to the limit, making history as the youngest team ever to compete in a men’s World Championship final.

This victory adds the World Championship title to Åhman and Hellvig’s growing list of accolades, cementing their status as the dominant force in men’s beach volleyball. Hölting Nilsson and Andersson took home a historic silver, ensuring Sweden claimed both top spots on the podium—only the second country ever to achieve this feat.
