Rendez-Vous-A French Baroque collaboration

Building on a collaboration that commenced two years ago, Sydney’s The Marais Project and Perth-based early music specialists, HIP Company, turn their attention to the elegance and sophistication of the French Baroque.
Drawing inspiration from the story of famed composer and viola da gambist, Marin Marais and his teacher, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe – as told in the cult movie ‘Tous le matin du monde’ (all the mornings of the world) – this program also highlights music by a range of composers including Couperin, Rebel, and Charpentier.
Many of these musicians worked at the zenith of French artistic achievement during the era of Louis XIV, often called The Sun King, but they rendezvous in 2025 at Mosman Art Gallery.
“Given that The Marais Project has a focus on music for the viola da gamba, we have always prioritised French music,” commented Marais Project Director, Jenny Eriksson. ‘But the opportunity to expand our ensemble and repertoire in this project with HIP Company is a real thrill.’
This one-off Sydney performance is part of a series of appearances where both ensembles feature at the 2025 Canowindra Baroque Music Festival (19-21 September) and Government House Ballroom, Perth, on 4 October.
HIP Company co-director and highly-regarded soprano, Bonnie de la Hunty – well known to Sydney audiences from soloist duties with Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera and Bach Akademie Australia – echoes Eriksson’s enthusiasm: “Working with The Marais Project is such a joy and an honour for us – particularly in their 25th and HIP Company’s 5th anniversary year. We’re excited bring HIP Company to the East Coast.”
HIP Company’s new album, ‘Bedlam’ will also be released in September 2025.
